Class 1 Nursery

Introduction to the Nursery

Little Houghton CEVA Primary School Nursery is a term time nursery which encourages children from three years old to learn in a fun and supportive way. Through the exercise of their imagination, play and through their powers of imitation, each child develops their own unique potential within a secure and calm environment.

Nursery share a class with our Reception children, this helps children settle into school life and have role models to look up to.  Our classroom is light and spacious, with resources and toys for every stage of development. Free play, both inside and out, is encouraged and children have lots of different opportunities to be creative. Children also enjoy structured activities that help prepare them for the move to 'big school', such as short, fun maths inputs where they sing songs and count. We also deliver phonics sessions where the children explore various sounds before looking at letter sounds ready for Reception. They are also welcome to join in when Reception children are learning on the carpet if they choose to.

Class 1 have their own outdoor area, which is fully enclosed with lots of exciting play equipment. Children have access to the outdoor throughout the day with adults supervising.

Day in Nursery in class 1

When the children come into school they are encouraged to independently put their belongings away in their drawers and on their pegs. They are then able to explore the indoor environment and play with resources of their choosing.

After we have completed the register, Nursery children have their fun phonics session with a TA where they play games based on different sounds to get children ready for Phonics in Reception.

In class 1 we have a snack table; Nursery children are encouraged to have their fruit at this table when they are hungry.

Half way through the morning we have a play time, Nursery children stay in our outdoor area for this with adults.

After play time Nursery children have their maths session with a TA where they learn through singing songs, using props and playing games. This is about 5/10 minutes, then children come back into the classroom to learn through play.

At lunchtime Nursery children sit in the hall to eat their lunch with the rest of the school, this helps them get used to louder environments and makes them feel a part of the community. They then play in the class 1 outdoor area.

After lunch time, children have access to both indoors and outdoors. There are also different activities set up in both areas that they have free choice from.
